Now Blooming, Daffodils
As one of the first flowers to arrive in early spring, these hardy perennials symbolize renewal and hope and are a popular flower when it comes to representing springtime.
Daffodils come from the narcissus family, of which there are many different types. The most treasured varieties surprisingly aren’t yellow, we love the faded peach and creamy display of Narcissus Delnashaugh and Narcissus Actaea with its pure white petals and vivid yellow and red centre. Both make great cut flowers...in fact we love all the happy sunshine hues Daffodils bring into our homes.
They do require a little more attention as a cut flower because Daffodils produce a toxic, irritant sap, which quickly creates murky water filled with bacteria. This can shorten the life of other flowers when they’re cut and placed in a vase.
There are a couple of options to help with this;
- Cut the daffodil and place in cool water overnight before placing in the vase with other flowers, don’t re-cut the daffodil stems as advised above.
- Change the water in the vase each day to prevent the build up of the toxins.
Spring is looking bright and the daffodils are just one more reason to pop over to the shop and discover what’s new for the season ahead and take home a bunch of floral joy - fresh blooms!
